2nd Annual Kayak for Cancer Event is October 8 at Atwood Lake Park

September 8, 2016

Each October, Union Hospital leads a community-wide initiative to Paint Tusc Pink as part of the effort to bring attention to Breast Cancer Awareness Month.  Last year, the Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District (MWCD) created an event to serve as a fundraiser, Kayak for Cancer, where all proceeds were donated to Union Hospital’s Breast Imaging Center. The initiative not only brought awareness for the disease and raise money for Union Hospital, it also encouraged residents from around the area to go outdoors and enjoy the lake from a new perspective - Floating on a kayak.

Now in its second year, yoga at the beach and kayak basics have been added to the event.

Registration will begin at 9am at the beach at Atwood Lake Park, followed by yoga on the beach at 9:30. Led by an instructor from Be Yoga Studios, the session is open to all skill levels for a $5 donation and anyone can participate.  Kayak Basics will be offered at 10am for beginners or anyone needing a refresher on kayak safety. A guided paddle will begin at 10:30am.  Event participants are welcome to join in the group paddle or explore the lake on their own.

Boating participants can bring their own kayaks and equipment or rent one from the MWCD.  The requested donation for anyone bringing their own boat is $10.  Anyone needing to rent can choose from a solo kayak for a $25 donation or a tandem kayak for a $40 donation. Kayaks will be available on a first come, first served basis and includes a paddle and life jacket.  Advance registration is required for rental, contact Kara Musser at 330-343-6647 x 2614.
